Documentary Film on the History of Music and the Pipe Organ in the Ljubljana Cathedral

Music has been an integral part of the Ljubljana Cathedral since the Diocese of Ljubljana was established in 1461. Soon after St. Nicholas Church was designated as a cathedral, an organ was installed, donated by the first bishop Žiga Lamberg. Over the years, many organists and composers have contributed to the cathedral’s musical legacy, and various organs from different makers have been exchanged. Today, the cathedral is home to an organ built by Ivan Milavec (Op. 26, 1911), which is over than 110 years old. This instrument is an unaltered sound-technical gem from the Slovenian Late Romantic period, and as one of the few preserved instruments from this era, it holds significant historical value within the broader European context.

A documentary film about the history of music and the organ in the Ljubljana Cathedral was created at the launch and presentation of the project for the restoration of the Milavec organ in the cathedral. The film explores the rich history of music and organ art at the Ljubljana Cathedral, dating back to at least the 16th century. It highlights the significance of the cathedral’s musical heritage and its role within the broader context of Slovenian culture.

The script for the documentary was written by Gregor Klančič, Tomaž Sevšek Šramel, and Luka Posavec, who also directed the film.
